Abstract
► Human and climate-induced nutrient variation (changes in element concentrations and ratios) lead to eutrophication and the degradation of aquatic ecosystems. ► The proliferation of damming modifies the nutrient balance in the aquatic environment. ► The challenges to scientific research and management were discussed. ► An integrated framework was proposed for effective nutrient management from watershed to coast. ► The management framework should integrate an interdisciplinary scientific approach and adaptive principles.
