Abstract
► UK voters 1857-1914 did not hold new governments fully responsible for the economy. ► After that each 1% rise in the price level led to a 0.21% swing against the government. ► Each 1% rise in unemployment led to a 0.42% swing against the government. ► The borough seats, not the county ones, drove economic voting.
