Abstract
⺠We operationalize the notion of a “critical election” in American politics. ⺠Both the magnitude and durability of the electoral change are key concepts. ⺠Using novel statistical tests we assess the joint frequency of electoral shifts. âºÂ Partisan realignments and critical elections are still useful theoretical constructs.
