Abstract
⺠Time series and surveys of support for war (Korea and Vietnam) are examined. ⺠The prospect of victory affected wartime morale in both cases. ⺠It did so regardless of elite cues such as partisanship. ⺠Casualties left only a weak imprint on popular support for those wars. ⺠When the prospect of victory collapsed, so did wartime morale.
