Abstract
► The paper studies the effect of expected closeness of elections on turnout. ► Aggregate level data is used on runoffs in Hungarian general elections. ► Expectations about closeness of the runoff is proxied by first round margins. ► Expected closeness increases turnout in runoffs substantially. ► Ex post measures of expected closeness lead to a measurement error problem.
