Abstract
⺠The paper studies the effect of expected closeness of elections on turnout. ⺠Aggregate level data is used on runoffs in Hungarian general elections. ⺠Expectations about closeness of the runoff is proxied by first round margins. ⺠Expected closeness increases turnout in runoffs substantially. ⺠Ex post measures of expected closeness lead to a measurement error problem.
