Abstract
⺠Political parties often compete for voters by stressing issues they feel they own. ⺠Such 'selective emphasis' may not always be electorally beneficial. ⺠We describe the conditions when it becomes counter-productive. ⺠We illustrate this by assessing mainstream party strategies confronting the extreme-right. ⺠We also present a more general model of voter behaviour.
