Abstract
► Political parties often compete for voters by stressing issues they feel they own. ► Such 'selective emphasis' may not always be electorally beneficial. ► We describe the conditions when it becomes counter-productive. ► We illustrate this by assessing mainstream party strategies confronting the extreme-right. ► We also present a more general model of voter behaviour.
