► We analyze why big brand companies are increasingly integrating sustainability. ► We reveal that the main driver is the pursuit of business value and governance power. ► Value and power gains are especially significant within global supply chains. ► We find reductions in per unit energy, material, water, and waste impacts. ► Nonetheless, we see innate limits for fundamental change to environmental governance.
