Abstract
⺠High urban population growth is widely regarded as the most pressing demographic challenge of the 21st century. ⺠A statistical analysis of new urban riot data reveals that city population growth is unrelated to political violence. ⺠Urban political violence is primarily a function of weak political institutions, economic shocks and ongoing civil conflict.
