Abstract
⺠We examine the social-ecological impacts of and responses to a large tsunami. ⺠Globalization both fosters and undermines adaptive capacity that underpins resilience. ⺠Communities negotiate trade-offs between shorter-term events and longer-term ones. ⺠Customary-land tenure nurtures general resilience at the cost of resilience to tsunamis.
