Abstract
► This empirical study employs a values-based approach to climate change adaptation. ► We develop values from 53 interviews in two communities in northeastern Canada. ► Different values shape distinct subjective, intangible effects of climate change. ► Values influence perception of climate variability and change and adaptive responses. ► Barriers to adaptation emerge from competing and conflicting values.
