Abstract
This article analyzes the potential for reducing vehicle atmospheric pollutant emissions as a result of the implementation of Accelerated Vehicle Retirement and Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Programs. Application of both programs, together and individually, is simulated for the period 2003-2010, targeting the light-duty vehicles of the largest Brazilian urban agglomeration. This article also quantifies the impact of implementing the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Air Pollution Control Program (PROCONVE) on the emissions. Results of simulations indicate that these programs can contribute significantly to the reduction of vehicle emissions.
