Abstract
⺠We examine how independence influences caring relationships as people age. ⺠Discourse analysis shows the consequences of promoting independence in later life. ⺠Independence promotes self-sufficiency and sees dependence as burdensome. ⺠An alternative approach of 'being there' values personal care. ⺠Caring as the responsibility of communities rather than family members.
