Abstract
This article focuses on the roles that governments take in promoting, protecting and enhancing the health and well-being of their populations. It differentiates between the policy options available to governments (e.g. legislation, taxation) and the key roles that governments carry out using these policy options. Through case studies, it provides an insight into the governmental landscape, identifying key drivers and levers, and suggesting ways in which progress can be made by making links between policy areas.
