Abstract
There was a dramatic increase in the prevalence of obesity in rural adults, and this was greater in younger adults. Changes in cigarette smoking did not explain the increase. There is an urgent need to identify and implement effective interventions to slow if not reverse the trend, particularly in rural populations.
