Abstract
⺠After three electoral victories in a row, but then an extended period of unpopularity, Labour lost power. ⺠The Conservatives failed to secure an overall majority for themselves. ⺠Together with the Liberal Democrats the Conservatives formed the first peacetime coalition since the 1930s. ⺠Instead of being exceptional, coalitions may occur more frequently in future.
