► Single oral dose of potassium bromate induced nephrotoxicity in rats. ► Brush border membrane enzymes were inhibited by 50-60%. ► Bromate induced oxidative stress in renal cortex and medulla. ► The activities of carbohydrate metabolic enzymes were altered. ► Effect of bromate was reversible; it was maximum at 48 h and then recovers.
