Abstract
► Bran bioprocessing in wholemeal wheat bread induces colonic production of butyrate. ► This is higher than that of a control bread with native bran and other bread types. ► The increase in colonic butyrate production seems in exchange for propionate. ► No increment in the postprandial butyrate plasma concentration is detected in men.
