► The chemistry of Pd(II) and Pt(II) is explored for heteroleptic bidentate ligands. ► 6-Methyl substituents on pyridines, or iodo ligands at Pd, affect structures. ► Mononuclear PdX2N2, binuclear and trinuclear structures are described.
