Abstract
This paper revisits the advantages and disadvantages associated with the location of Montreal in the container shipping market. Traditionally, the St. Lawrence River has proved a competitive way to connect the industrial heart of North America with Europe. How does this premise hold in an era of ever-larger containerships? Recent trends in container market share, the number of ships deployed and the services provided are analyzed. It is found that while Montreal continues to maintain its rank among top container ports on the East Coast of North America, the competitive environment has changed significantly over the last 5 years.
