► Dry hydroxypropylated, refined cellulose forms transparent paper at certain degree of substitution. ► Hydroxypropylation also improves paper elongation. ► Esterification of cellulose is effective if water is removed thoroughly. ► Esterification renders the cellulose very hydrophobic.
