► The corrosion resistance of Nitinol is dependent on the surface preparation. ► Ground samples are susceptible to localized corrosion attack. ► Polished and chemically etched samples improve the resistance to localized corrosion. ► Surface preparation affects the topographical, morphological and chemical properties of the Nitinol surface. ► The behaviour of Nitinol in simulated physiological solution is dependent on pH.
