Abstract

Since 1994, Danish waste treatment plants have been obliged to report to the Danish EPA the annual amounts of waste treated. Applying these data, we analyse the development, link amounts of waste to economic and demographic variables, and present a model for the generation and treatment of waste in Denmark. Using the model and official projections of the economic development, a baseline projection for the generation and treatment of waste is presented.

► We analyse historical developments in waste generation and handling in Denmark. ► Use econometrics to develop a forecast model. ► We show that different waste streams depend on different economic activities. ► Relative decoupling of waste generation from economic activities is present. ► Aggregated decoupling change with the composition of economic activities.
