Abstract
With B2O3 present, the non-uniformity of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) distribution inside BaTiO3 green tape is reduced. This has been attributed to a chemical reaction between dissociated borate ion and PVA, which forms a gel-type structure in the aqueous BaTiO3 slurry. Addition of a plasticizer of ethylene glycol (EG) into the aqueous BaTiO3 slurry minimizes the degree of gelation between B2O3 and PVA, but shows no significant change in the distribution of PVA inside the dried BaTiO3 green tape. Mathematical analysis is completed to describe the PVA distribution in dried BaTiO3 green tape, and the results show reasonable agreement with experimental observations.
