Abstract
►The mechanisms of formation of long-period gratings written in a pure-silica-core fibre by using arc discharges were investigated. ►Computer simulations show that gratings formation can be due to microdeformations. ►The near-field intensity distribution confirms the asymmetry of the perturbation.
