Abstract
⺠Insoluble matrix of nacre gets smooth and flat during protein degradation imaged by AFM. ⺠We propose a model for protein coated chitin filaments in insoluble matrix of nacre. ⺠Hydration state dependent Young's modulus of the organic layers is shown. ⺠Fully hydrated organic matrix of nacre has an elastic modulus below 1 MPa comparable to some hydrogels.
