Abstract
The Al-Pd-Fe decagonal phase with â¼1.6 nm periodicity was found to solidify from the liquid phase in alloys between about 73-82 at% Al and 10-17 at% Pd. Being metastable it is formed at cooling rates as low as 5 °C/min. During TEM experiments the decagonal phase decomposed, depending on composition, into either the multi-twinned orthorhombic ε16-phase or the complex nanodomain intermediate state.
