Abstract
▶ In situ TiC particle reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMCs) were successfully fabricated by reactive sintering of Ti + Mo2C and Ti + VC compacts. ▶ The main strengthening mechanisms of the composites are solid solution, grain refinement and particulate strengthening. ▶ The mechanical properties of the TMCs are greatly influenced by the distribution of TiC particles at ambient temperature. ▶ The volume percent of TiC particles is the major factor for the strengthening of TMCs at elevated temperatures.
