► A mathematical model was used to predict microstructural evolution during galvannealing. ► A numerical method used the Murray-Landis variable grid to solve the model. ► The simulation results agree well with experimental observations. ► The model can be utilized to optimize the galvannealing parameters. ► A new perspective on two stages annealing is validated as a better galvannealing process.
