Abstract
⺠Thermal barrier coatings protect turbine blades from high temperatures. ⺠Oxidized coatings failed by application of water drops at room temperature. ⺠Water-induced failure is nearly instantaneous (videos). ⺠Failure is always at the scale-metal interface. ⺠Humidity is identified as new factor in TBC life studies.
