Abstract
The erosion characteristics of bare and nitrided Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr shape memory alloys have been systematically studied using slurry and cavitation erosion tests. The bare Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr specimen and SUS304 stainless steel exhibit similar slurry erosion resistance. The nitrided Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr specimen exhibits a lower weight loss than the bare specimen at impinged angle 30° due to the hardening effect of nitrided layer. Both bare and nitrided Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr alloys exhibit a better cavitation erosion resistance than SUS304 stainless steel due to the accommodation of stress-induced martensite. The nitrided layer can effectively improve the cavitation erosion resistance of Fe-30Mn-6Si-5Cr specimen.
