Abstract
A method of reconstructing the atmospheric profiles by inverting amplitude data in GPS/LEO radio occultation observations is given under the assumptions of geometric optics and a thin phase screen. Two factors, a geometrical attenuation and a physical attenuation, are identified in the received signal amplitude. The profiles of bending angle, refractivity, pressure and temperature are reconstructed by inversion of observed signal-noise ratio series obtained by the CHAMP satellite, and the results are compared with those obtained by inversion of the phase data.
