Abstract
⺠Engineered impacts may be useful for deflecting asteroids on a course to the Earth. ⺠The effectiveness depends directly on the momentum transferred to the asteroid. ⺠That momentum can be a factor β larger than that of the impactor. ⺠This presents an analysis based on scaling and measured ejecta in impacts. ⺠The porosity of the asteroid is the dominant factor that determines β.
