► Theoretical study of how solar wind affects Jupiter's magnetosphere-ionosphere system. ► Power dissipated in atmosphere is anti-correlated with solar wind pressure. ► Power dissipated in magnetosphere is a maximum for solar wind pressure ∼0.02-0.06 nPa. ► Auroral emission and brightness increase with magnetospheric size. ► Value of radial current at infinity influences magnetodisc structure.
