Abstract
⺠The finite-time rotation number is a fast and reliable indicator for chaotic dynamical structures, in particular Lagrangian coherent structures. ⺠Finite-time rotation numbers provide essentially the same results as finite-time Lyapunov exponents, but with less computer time. ⺠Specific applications in fluid dynamics and plasma physics are shown, comparing finite-time rotation numbers with finite-time Lyapunov exponents.
