Abstract
⺠We report a novel and efficient synthesis of a series of new S-acyl glutathione (acyl-SG) thioesters. ⺠Acyl-SG thioesters act as prodrugs, increasing the intracellular glutathione. ⺠Polyunsaturated acyl-SG thioesters possess inherent antioxidant properties. ⺠Acyl-SG thioesters reduce lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial dysfunction in Aβ-treated cells. ⺠Acyl-SG thioesters protect against Aβ-induced neurodegeneration and glial reaction in rat brain.
