Abstract
- Improved early cancer detection, combined with better therapeutic monitoring procedures and dynamic treatment options, is needed to combat tumor persistence, resurgences from tumor dormancy and therapy failures.
- Better understanding of cancer stem cells, the known cause of tumor persistence, dormancy reoccurrence and therapy failure prompted us to summarize important new approaches to early cancer detection and therapy monitoring.
- Part of the review covers the use of modern cellular models and labeling techniques for studying cancer stem cells.
