Abstract
⺠Expression of bcl2l in the thyroid primordium is necessary against cell death. ⺠Thyroid transcription factors inhibit cell death by regulating bcl2l expression. ⺠This mechanism removes cells that do not express the complement of thyroid transcription factors. ⺠This is the first description of an active mechanism to protect the thyroid during morphogenesis.
