Glucose uptake mediated by glucose transporter 1 is essential for early tooth morphogenesis and size determination of murine molars

► We examined the functional significance of class I GLUT in murine odontogenesis. ► GLUT1 was localized in the enamel organ of bud-stage molar germs. ► The inhibition of GLUTs1/2 in cap-to-bell-stage tooth germs reduced tooth size. ► The inhibition of GLUT1 in the bud-stage explants induced the developmental arrest. ► GLUT1 is essential for early tooth morphogenesis and tooth size determination.
