Control of Distal-less expression in the Drosophila appendages by functional 3′ enhancers

► The 3′region of the Distal-less locus contains several transcriptional enhancers. ► An early 3′ leg enhancer is absolutely required for Distal-less function. ► A late 3′ leg enhancer is required for self-maintenance. ► In addition, further elements drive expression in several other organs. ► Some of these enhancers may be directional, and work more efficiently 3′ of the gene.
