Abstract
⺠Understanding gradual neural crest evolution requires comparisons of both early and late neural crest development. ⺠If ascidians have a rudimentary neural crest, early evolution of crest specification did not require extensive gene duplication. ⺠Data are insufficient to accurately assess the importance of gene duplication on the evolution of neural crest.
