► There is only limited data on the field effectiveness of FMD vaccines. ► The field effectiveness of FMD emergency and routine vaccination was investigated. ► Emergency vaccination had a high effectiveness in preventing morbidity. ► Same vaccine when used for routine vaccination had a low effectiveness. ► Emergency vaccination is required for outbreak control in endemic countries.
