► We undertook a global systematic review of peer-reviewed evidence. ► We compared household vaccination coverage sources to medical provider sources. ► We found poor measures of agreement between the two sources. ► Vaccination coverage from household sources should be interpreted with care. ► We provide recommendations for improving validity of household vaccination sources.
