Introduction of silent mutations into the NP gene of influenza A viruses as a possible strategy for the creation of a live attenuated vaccine

► Influenza A virus replication was impaired by silent mutations in the NP gene. ► Influenza A virus containing silently mutated NP gene was attenuated in mice. ► This may represent a novel strategy for development of live attenuated vaccine.
