Abstract
⺠Haemagglutinin is a determinant of many viral properties. ⺠Specificity derived from different human and avian sialic acid linked receptors. ⺠There is evidence for genetic and structural constraints on haemagglutinin. ⺠Mortality of emergent pandemic may be reduced if haemagglutinin specificity changes.
