Abstract
⺠We investigated lower rates of HPV vaccination in African American adolescent females. ⺠Physician failure to initiate vaccine discussion is greatest barrier to immunization. ⺠Unfamiliarity with term 'HPV' and link to cervical disease is also a key barrier. ⺠Prior maternal HPV trauma and protecting daughter's health motivates immunization. ⺠Recommend providers initiate discussion and begin vaccine series in first visit.
