Specific glycan elements determine differential binding of individual egg glycoproteins of the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni by host C-type lectin receptors

► Schistosoma mansoni egg glycoproteins are immunomodulatory via binding to host C-type lectin receptors. ► Native IPSE/α1 glycoprotein is bound by dendritic cells, primarily via the mannose receptor binding to LeX glycans. ► Native kappa-5 glycoprotein is bound by dendritic cells via multiple C-type lectin receptors. ► GalNAcβ1-4(Fucα1-3)GlcNAc and GalNAcβ1-4GlcNAc glycans on kappa-5 mediate binding by the C-type lectin receptors, dendritic cell-specific ICAM3-grabbing non-integrin and macrophage galactose-type lectin, respectively.
