Abstract
⺠Evidence for the endemicity of Plasmodium vivax in west Africa is accumulating. ⺠P. vivax has recently been identified in African apes. ⺠Mitochondrial genome sequences suggest extant P. vivax may be of African origin. ⺠The implications of these reports on theories of the origins of P. vivax are discussed.
