Abstract
- Current carbon export models fail to capture intra-regional variability in the CCE.
- A model is developed to predict export from net primary production (NPP, R2 =0.88).
- Export efficiency is positively correlated with temperature and negatively with NPP.
- These unexpected correlations are explained by decoupling of production and export.
- Regional estimates of carbon export show a 10% drop in export during El Niño years.
