Abstract
âºDuration and formant data are presented for the central vowels /É/ and /É/ in Arrernte. âºResults show that the contrast exists only in word-medial position. âº/É/ is not affected by metrical stress; /É/ may be lower and longer under stress. âº/É/ is more affected by consonant context than is /É/. âºThese vowels' primary role is to carry cues to consonant place of articulation.
