Abstract
Molecular tilting effect to the Smectic layer normal at Smectic C phase liquid crystal is investigated in terms of its retardation switching effect. This investigation clarified that in some specific initial molecular alignment case, Smectic C phase liquid crystal molecular behavior has in-plane only movement, resulting in almost complete suppression of out-of-plane retardation switching. Such behavior indicates that Smectic layer stability is also conceivable with initial surface anchoring influence in terms of artificial influence of surface anchoring to govern tilted Smectic liquid crystal molecular movement behavior. Possible control in in-plane only retardation switching would provide new phase modulation devices.
